ABOUT
Aspen Joelle (she/they) is an experimental photographer,
printmaker, and social surrealist. Influenced by a childhood shaped by fantastical films, their work explores surrealism, nostalgia, and escapism while engaging in social commentary on gender norms, stereotypes, and conservative systems. By dismantling the rigid archetypes of the “traditional family unit” or hyper masculinity and domestic femininity, they utilize dreamlike imagery to expose how these societal expectations often act as a gilded cage, stifling individuality in favor of performative conformity.
After receiving a BA in Studio Art from California State
University, Fresno, Aspen Joelle has continued to develop a unique global perspective. Pairing the moody atmosphere of Italian Renaissance works and the typographical conventions of 1930's Japanese propaganda. Aspen Joelle's work demonstrates a unique global perspective and style heavily influenced by their time spent studying internationally.
They further translate this aesthetic into concert
photography and immersive visualizers, capturing the raw energy of live performance. Referencing Lewis Carroll and Christina Henry, they translate the decay of Wonderland into vintage sepia tones and memories reconstructed as an inky, colorful acid-trip. Drawing from fantasy imagery and historical visual language, their work merges memory with imagination to create dreamlike narratives.
